My Proposal

In this assignment I have been asked to create a new magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread all based on the music industry. I am hoping that my music magazine will show originality and a different approach to how music magazines are presented today. With music magazines currently being aimed at men im going to aim my magazine at both men and women, there fore creating a unisex magazine. Music magazines in today’s society have become very stereotypical and race based. Through looking through magazines myself I found that only 18% of pictures in Q magazine consisted of women and only 10% of it had people from a different race. This showed me that I had the perfect opportunity to make my magazine different to all the others and create a completely uni sex and multicultural music magazine.

The band I will feature in my double page spread are also seen as a unisex band as not only can women resist the charm that they show in their performances but it relates to men through their lyrics (girls, life,drink).

The main focus of the genre of my magazine will be indie/rock/alternative due to my audience being teenagers. The reason for this genre of music becoming more appealing to teenagers can be seen due to many festivals promoting these types of music. The basic target audience for my magazine will be teenagers from the age of 15-21.I will have to deconstruct and compare other magazines that are on the current market to get a feel of what is essential and needed in magazines today. The music magazines I will deconstruct are NME and top of the pops are there are both main stream magazines.

I will create a survey on survey monkey for my own primary research to find out what my audience feels about music magazines from my peers. I will also be using blogger.com a blogging site in order to post and upload my work onto an e-portfolio.
I am also going to be using all of my own photography and my own editing on these photos. I will be using editing software such as Photoshop and Picasa 3.

My Audience profile will be people in the socio-economic groups of C1/C2/B/A, but also students as they are my main target audience.

Potential ideas

For my first idea I have taken into consideration that a band is performing in my local area who are from Brighton. This group is called ‘floors and walls’ that I have regular contact with. To make this all happen I will email the group and ask them a series of questions to use in my magazine as an interview. I will also go along to the gig and take my own photographs to use in my issue (possible photographs for front cover also). I will then name my double page spread a name of their song either ‘Lets get grimy’ or ‘the stand’. However If this does not go according to plan I also have heard of a new uprising singer on the Isle Of Wight who i could interview and take photos of.
For my second idea i am thinking of doing an double page spread of peoples ‘favourite track of the month’ for this I will ask at least 20 people for a photograph of themselves along with a quote about their favourite song they’ve heard that month
For my third idea I will do a double page spread on new album realises. This will include albums from many different genres along with my own critique opinion.
