NME magazine (research)

NME magazine is known for its white background, and its big and bold red title. This captures its audience as it is so eye catching. At the top of the page is usually information on highlights inside the issue, or simply a line saying about posters that are inside.
Krissi Murison was named the magazine's eleventh editor on July 29, 2009. The magazine's first female editor, she took over on September 1, 2009.The New Musical Express (better known as the NME) is a popular music magazine in the United Kingdom which has been published weekly since March 1952. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, which first appeared in the 14 November 1952 edition. The magazine's commercial heyday was during the 1970s when it became the best-selling British music magazine. During the period 1972 to 1976 it was particularly associated with gonzo journalism, then became closely associated with punk rock through the writing of Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill.
The paper's first issue was published on 7 March 1952 after the Musical Express and Accordion Weekly was bought by London music promoter Maurice Kinn, and relaunched as the New Musical Express. It was initially published in a non-glossy tabloid format on standard newsprint. On 14 November 1952, taking its cue from the U.S. magazine Billboard, it created the first UK Singles Chart. The first of these was, in contrast to more recent charts, a top twelve sourced by the magazine itself from sales in regional stores around the UK. The first number one was "Here in My Heart" by Al Martino.
In 2002 the NME started publishing a series of themed magazines reprinting vintage articles, interviews and reviews from the NME archives. The magazine special editions were called NME Originals, with some featuring articles from other music titles owned by IPC, including Melody Maker, Rave and Uncut magazines. Notable issues so far have featured Radiohead, The Beatles, Punk rock, Gothic rock, Britpop, The Rolling Stones, Mod, Nirvana, and the solo years of The Beatles. The series has had several editors, the most prominent of whom have been Steve Sutherland and Chris Hunt. The most recent issue of NME Originals was published in 2005.You can find NME magazines in any major retail shop/supermarket.

Rolling Stone's magazine Research

Owner: Jann Wenner - also the owner of Mens Journal and US weekly magazines.
Rolling Stone is a United States based magazine devoted to music, politics and popular culture that is published every two weeks. Rolling Stone was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner (who is still editor and publisher) and music critic Ralph J. Gleason.
The magazine was named after the 1948 Muddy Waters song of the same name. The magazine was known for its political coverage beginning in the 1970s, with the enigmatic and controversial gonzo journalist Hunter. S. Thompson. Rolling Stone Magazine changed its format in the 1990s to appeal to younger readers, often focusing on young television or film actors and pop music. This led to criticism that the magazine was emphasizing style over substance. In recent years, the magazine has resumed its traditional mix of content, including in-depth political stories, and has seen its circulation increase. The magazine is distributed in over 33 countries. You can find them in any major supermarket as well as small convenience stores.
Rolling Stone, published every other week, has paid circulation in the United States of more than 1.4 million, the highest in its history, but its single-copy sales have fallen from 189,000 in 1999, to 132,000 last year. In the 1990s, facing competition from mens magazines such as FHM, Rolling Stone reinvented itself, hiring former FHM editor Ed Needham. The magazine started targeting younger readers and offering more sex-oriented content, which often focused on sexy young television or film actors as well as pop music.
One of the hallmarks of Rolling Stone is its excellent photography. From the cover image through to the last page, photos are what drives much of the graphical nature of this magazine. Articles are accompanied by photographs or illustrations, and the overall tone of the magazine is visually impactful. Awards 2007 National Magazine Award For General Excellence, ASME. Editorial excellence honors in reporting and photo essay categories, ASME 2006. Since the inception of ASME, Rolling Stone has earned over 50 nominations and 12 wins.
Rolling Stone magazine is a cultural icon. It’s the number one pop culture reference point for 13 million young adults. In addition to its authoritative position in music, Rolling Stone’s sphere of influence reaches into entertainment, movies, television, technology, and national affairs. Rolling Stone covers everything that’s important, trend-setting, and newsworthy to the thought leaders among young adults.

My Proposal
_medium.jpg)
In this assignment I have been asked to create a new magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread all based on the music industry. I am hoping that my music magazine will show originality and a different approach to how music magazines are presented today. With music magazines currently being aimed at men im going to aim my magazine at both men and women, there fore creating a unisex magazine. Music magazines in today’s society have become very stereotypical and race based. Through looking through magazines myself I found that only 18% of pictures in Q magazine consisted of women and only 10% of it had people from a different race. This showed me that I had the perfect opportunity to make my magazine different to all the others and create a completely uni sex and multicultural music magazine.
The band I will feature in my double page spread are also seen as a unisex band as not only can women resist the charm that they show in their performances but it relates to men through their lyrics (girls, life, drink).
The main focus of the genre of my magazine will be indie/rock/alternative due to my audience being teenagers. The reason for this genre of music becoming more appealing to teenagers can be seen due to many festivals promoting these types of music. The basic target audience for my magazine will be teenagers from the age of 15-21.I will have to deconstruct and compare other magazines that are on the current market to get a feel of what is essential and needed in magazines today. The music magazines I will deconstruct are NME and top of the pops are there are both main stream magazines.
I will create a survey on survey monkey for my own primary research to find out what my audience feels about music magazines from my peers. I will also be using blogger.com a blogging site in order to post and upload my work onto an e-portfolio.
I am also going to be using all of my own photography and my own editing on these photos. I will be using editing software such as Photoshop and Picasa 3.
My Audience profile will be people in the socio-economic groups of C1/C2/B/A, but also students as they are my main target audience.
Possible features:
Photographs
Interviews
Band/gig information
Album realises
Free downloads
Potential ideas
For my first idea I have taken into consideration that a band is performing in my local area who are from Brighton. This group is called ‘floors and walls’ that I have regular contact with. To make this all happen I will email the group and ask them a series of questions to use in my magazine as an interview. I will also go along to the gig and take my own photographs to use in my issue (possible photographs for front cover also). I will then name my double page spread a name of their song either ‘Lets get grimy’ or ‘the stand’. However If this does not go according to plan I also have heard of a new uprising singer on the Isle Of Wight who i could interview and take photos of.
For my second idea i am thinking of doing an double page spread of peoples ‘favourite track of the month’ for this I will ask at least 20 people for a photograph of themselves along with a quote about their favourite song they’ve heard that month
For my third idea I will do a double page spread on new album realises. This will include albums from many different genres along with my own critique opinion.
